Coasts that face the sunset
- Chania old harbour — the western side of the harbour catches the last light over the lighthouse.
- Falasarna and Kissamos — Crete's far west, with the sun setting straight into the open sea.
- Rethymno waterfront and the coast west of the town towards Georgioupoli.
- Agios Nikolaos and the Mirabello Gulf — the sun sets behind the mountains across the bay, lighting the water pink.
- South coast villages such as Paleochora and Sougia, where tavernas sit right on the beach.
When to book and arrive
- June–July: sunset roughly 20:30–20:45. Book for 19:45–20:00.
- August: sunset roughly 20:00–20:30. Book for 19:30.
- May and September–October: sunset 19:00–20:00. Book an hour before.
- Ask specifically for a front-row or sea-facing table when you reserve; it is rarely given by default.
What a sunset dinner costs
View tables usually cost a little more than the same food one street back. Expect roughly €25–45 per person for a taverna meal with wine on a sunset waterfront, and €60–120+ per person for tasting menus at upscale sea-view restaurants. Fresh fish is priced by the kilo — confirm weight before ordering.
Tips for the best table
- Book at least one day ahead in peak season, three to five days ahead on weekends in August.
- Bring a light layer — west-coast evenings get windy.
- Order after the sunset; the kitchen is calmer and you will not miss the view waiting for food.
