The four romantic settings
- Venetian harbours โ Chania and Rethymno, lantern-lit water and lighthouses, busy but genuinely beautiful.
- Old-town courtyards โ walled, planted and quiet, mainly in Chania's Splantzia and Rethymno's back lanes.
- Waterfront tables facing Spinalonga โ Plaka and Elounda, the island's most photogenic dinner.
- Mountain and clifftop terraces โ sunset over the sea from above, found inland from most of the north coast.
Getting the timing right
Sunset in Crete falls around 20:50 in late June, 19:50 in late August and 18:40 in mid-October. Book about 45 minutes before sunset if you want the light on your table rather than the dark after it.
North-coast towns look out over the Cretan Sea to the north, so the sun sets to the side rather than in front of you. For sunset straight ahead over water, the west coast and the south coast are better.
What to ask when booking
- Ask explicitly for a front-row, terrace or courtyard table โ most restaurants hold their best tables for people who requested them.
- In July and August, book several days ahead for sunset slots.
- If you want quiet, book the later sitting; the first sitting is when families and tour groups eat.
- Mention an occasion โ most Cretan kitchens will bring something sweet at the end.
Which town for couples
- Elounda and Plaka โ the highest concentration of special-occasion dining on the island.
- Chania old town โ atmosphere, harbour and rooftop terraces.
- Rethymno โ the same combination at a slightly lower price and with fewer crowds.
- Agios Nikolaos โ lake and harbour tables, calm and compact.
- Any mountain village โ quieter, cheaper and often the most memorable evening of a trip.
