The harbour and the village
Around the square and the small port you will find straightforward fish tavernas, cafés and grills. This is where a normal Elounda dinner happens: a shared fish or octopus, a couple of salads, a carafe of wine, boats in front of you.
Plaka and the Spinalonga view
Five kilometres north, Plaka faces the Spinalonga fortress directly across a narrow channel. It is the area's classic sunset dinner and the tables at the water's edge are the most requested in eastern Crete — reserve them, and ask specifically for the front row.
Hotel fine dining
The Mirabello coast holds several of Greece's best-known resort restaurants, with modern Greek and Mediterranean tasting menus. They are generally open to non-residents by reservation, expect smart-casual dress in the evening, and sit well above island prices — €70 and up per person is normal before wine.
Where value is better
- Inland toward Pines, Kastelli and Mavrikiano — village tavernas above the bay.
- Agios Nikolaos, 15 minutes south, for a wider mid-range choice.
- Ordering small fried fish or octopus instead of a whole fish by the kilo.
- Lunch instead of dinner, which is quieter and often cheaper for the same view.
Booking
Elounda and Plaka run a short, intense season. From late June to early September, sunset waterfront tables should be booked several days ahead, and hotel restaurants generally require a reservation at any time. Out of season, much of the village closes.
